What To Know Before Applying For Any Job

Job Hunting With Intention: Part 1 (Before the Application)

Do you have a plan for your next job hunt, or are you just winging it? Most people aren't really job hunting. They're sending hope into the infinite void. Applying everywhere feels productive, but it's often directionless. Without strategy, effort becomes repetition instead of progress, and if you keep doing the same things, you'll keep getting the same results. The job market doesn't reward motion. It rewards intention. Random applications rarely lead to meaningful opportunities, so let's talk about how to approach your job search with real purpose.

This topic is broad enough that it's worth splitting into three phases: Before, During, and After the application. This post covers the first phase — what to get right before you send a single application. Without wasting much time, let's get right into these tips.

Tip 1: Know Exactly What You Want

Before applying anywhere, define your non-negotiables: role type, industry, work arrangement, and salary floor. Vague job seekers get vague results — clarity is a competitive advantage. If you don't know what you're looking for, any offer can start to sound right, and that's often how people end up underselling themselves.

Tip 2: Build a Target Company List

Resist the urge to apply to everything. Instead, identify 20–30 companies you genuinely want to work for, study them properly, and pursue them with intention. The quality of your pursuit will always beat the volume of your applications, and it makes each application feel more deliberate. That's the difference between a generic "why this company" line in a cover letter and a well-researched case for why you'd actually be a great fit.

Tip 3: Treat the Search Like a Job

Block out dedicated hours each day to intentionally plan your applications. For instance, you could use mornings for applications and afternoons for networking and follow-ups. Searching with discipline is what separates serious candidates from casual browsers, and recruiters can usually tell the difference. This matters even more if you're searching for remote roles, where competition is wider and organisation counts for a lot. Don't send applications haphazardly; have a system.

Tip 4: Audit Your Digital Presence First

This might be the most important tip on this list. Before any recruiter sees your CV, they've likely already searched your name. Make sure your LinkedIn, public profiles, and general online footprint reinforce the story your CV tells, not contradict it. You can have a stellar application undone by a single post that creates the wrong impression. Be thoughtful about what you put online and about what others post about you too.

Want help putting this into practice?

A great strategy still needs strong materials behind it. If your CV, cover letter, or LinkedIn profile aren't telling a clear, compelling story yet, that's where we come in. We help job seekers turn scattered applications into a focused, professional presence that gets noticed through tailored CV writing, cover letters that actually earn their place, and LinkedIn optimisation that holds up to recruiter scrutiny.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series on intentional job hunting. Part 2 will cover the application phase itself, and Part 3 will look at what to do after you've applied. See you in the next!
